What is İVF (in vitro fertilization) ?

In Latin the term “In vitro ”means in glass. This resembles that it is in a test tube outside the body and in a controlled external environment. By IVF, the patients ovum is taken and fertilized in the external environment. Then the egg is inserted back into the uterus to grow as normal.

Am I eligible for in vitro fertilization?

There are several factors that need to be considered to determine whether you are eligible for in vitro fertilization treatment. Women under 35 are normally healthy and are ideal for in vitro fertilization. Also, the man should be producing healthy sperm in order for the procedure to work.

How is this procedure is performed?

Before the treatment, several medicines are given to stimulate ovum production. Then the ova are then taken from the ovaries by a laparoscopic method with use of a fine needle. These ova are matched with sperm in the laboratory. The matching of ovum and sperm in the laboratory is called IVF. After fertilization, newly formed embryos are placed in the test tube for 2-3 days. Several embryos are then inserted into the uterus through a catheter. After this insertion ,a hormone therapy is initiated to the woman to help facilitate attachment. Providing that everything is optimal, the result of this pregnancy test will be positive.

What is the success rate using in vitro fertilization?

The pregnancy rate of women under 35 years by in vitro fertilization treatment is the same as a normal conception. The risk of miscarriage is also the same. The chance of a normal pregnancy is the same as when conceived by in vitro fertilization. Success rate of pregnancy by in vitro fertilization method worldwide varies by country, age and infertility status. USA. women under 35 years old have a 37% success rate of having a healthy baby by in vitro fertilization method.

What are the treatment options other than in vitro fertilization?

Your doctor will tell you whether the in vitro fertilization method is suitable for you. There are also other options for artificial insemination including , zygote or gamet transfer to uterine tubes, embryo freezing and intrauterine fertilization. You need to talk to your doctor to determine whether you are eligible for any of them. In intrauterine fertilization, the sperm are inserted into the uterus with assistive devices. It is generally a preferredn treatment in infertility with an unknown etiology where the male’s sperm is small or weak. It is easier and less complicated than in vitro fertilization. However, it is not an appropriate treatment for uterine tubes with obstruction or damage. During ovulation, the sperms are inserted by injection directly into the uterus. Before injecting, the sperm are washed and prepared for.

During ovulation, a soft catheter is inserted through the womans cervix into the uterus. Medicine may be prescribed for the woman to help increase ovulation. The success rate of these procedures depends on several factors including the age, etiology and period of infertility.
